Dr. Ronald (Ron) Shumacher is CMO for Care Services at Optum, UnitedHealth Group’s health services business. Tackling the biggest challenges in health care through innovation, Optum is one of the largest care delivery and care coordination companies for chronically ill, medically complex and post-acute care patients.
He serves as a member of the Joint Operating Committee that provides strategic direction and oversight to the Optum/Compassus national partnership.
Shumacher previously served as executive director and senior medical director for Evercare Mid-Atlantic and medical director and vice president of clinical delivery for UnitedHealthcare Medicare and Retirement. Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group, he practiced internal medicine and geriatrics in Montgomery County, Maryland, and served as the medical director of Trinity Senior Living Community in Burtonsville, Maryland.
Shumacher is board certified in internal medicine and is a certified medical director in long-term care.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed his residency at the Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Shumacher is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American College of Physician Executives and The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine.
