Kessler became a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives in 2016. He spent the last decade as chief of patient support services for one of the largest hospital systems in Los Angeles County, Citrus Valley Health Partners, a three-hospital system with a nationally known, free-standing hospice. He is a certified AMA/EPEC (Education for Physicians on End-of-Life Care) educator. In 1985, he started his own home care/hospice agency, which was one of the largest at the time in Los Angeles. In 1992, he sold it to Kimberly Quality Care. He is also the founder of grief.com which has had over one million visitors from 167 countries.
