Kurt Merkelz, MD, is medical director for the Compassus program serving the Houston, Texas area. He received his medical degree from University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and completed residencies in Family Medicine and Geriatric Medicine at University of Cincinnati, where he became assistant director of the international health program. He was director of the Geriatric Medicine Clinic at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio before embarking upon private practice in Houston. He is triple board certified in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine, Family Practice and Geriatrics.

Dr. Merkelz has focused on caring for older adults throughout his career. He has also been involved in medical relief work throughout the world, working with indigenous populations in several countries. He has published in a major journal and authored chapters in three textbooks. He is also a recipient of the R. Sean Morrison, M.D. Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hospice Physician Leadership. The award recognizes Compassus programs and physicians for their leadership in continuing to raise industry benchmarks for quality hospice care nationwide.
